â€Å"Manifest Destiny† is a phrase to describe the future of the United States that considerably impacted U.S. foreign policy in the 1840s and 1850s. The underlying idea of the doctrine was that the United States with its democratic system was in many ways superior to other nations. Therefore, it was morally obliged to expand in order to bring democracy and progress to new lands around. The virtue of the American nation, its superior abilities at development, and the mission to develop other neighboring parts of the continent formed the ideological basis for Manifest Destiny. At the same time, this ideology served a number of practical implications that were relevant to the US foreign policy in the 1840s and 1850s. As such, it underlay the policy of continentalism that warranted the expansion on the American continent aiming to make America stretch â€Å"from sea to shining sea†. For example, it played a role in the Oregon dispute with Great Britain in which President Polk elected in 1844 at first agreed to divide the state at the 49th parallel, but then a campaign began, claiming all Oregon to belong to the United States. In the relations with Mexico, the theme of Manifest Destiny was even more prominent. The decision of the Republic of Texas in 1836 to separate from Mexico and request entry to the United States was taken by many as evidence that the Untied States is indeed destined to â€Å"assemble† all neighboring territories. With the spirit of manifest destiny Americans settled, planted and did farming activities in the Indian land. This was especially due to the manifest destiny and territorial expansion. In their view they understood that the constitution did not allow or give the right to acquire land and expand boundaries as per the plans and powers in governments. Following further expansion of boundaries, there was imbalance in the number of slave state and Free State representatives in congress. It was a major challenge on the senators and representatives due to emerging accusations of conspiracies by congress on Free State members. Charles Sumner thought that the southerners wanted more land to have slavery in the territories and hence become slave states. Our Topic For This Paper Is Crime And Punishment. There Are Essays

Our topic for this paper is Crime and Punishment. There are several different issues on this subject. We chose three main points to talk about: The Crimes, the People who solved them, and the different types of punishments. These are the topics we chose for our report. Crime in the nineteeth century was rapid though out London. But because of all of the poverty and sickness in the streets, crime was the only way to survive. Most of the crimes that took place in London were crimes that involved stealing. Pickpocket gangs and street gamblers were a regular sight when walking down a major London street. Prostitution was also a big money maker on the streets, done by both girls and boys. But crimes though out the middle class and rich were mostly property crimes and disputes which made up 90% of all crimes committed by the upper-class. In Victorian England and like today there a two categories which crimes fall under. "Indictable" which is the same as our felony crimes that make up all of the major crimes. These crimes consist of: Murder, armed robbery, burglary, larceny, rape, and assaults on the police. The next called category is called " Summery " crimes which is equal to our misdemeanor crimes. Summery crimes were all minor crimes such as: Property crimes, Vagrancy, Drunkenness, Prostitution, Minor Larceny , and all other minor offenses. Probably the most famous criminal in the Victorian period was " Jack the Ripper ". Jack the Ripper was " the first modern sexual serial killer" ( Sugden, pg.2) Jack's trademark was the killing of female prostitutes. But not only did he kill them, he would surgically remove organs and intrails and place them near the dead body. "Jack the Ripper" wasn't his only nickname, he was also called" the Whitechaple murder " because the body's were found near the Whitechapel Road, and " The Leather Apron" because of a man that would come by and beat up the prostitutes for no reason. Jack the Ripper is credited for 9 killings, but police think that he might be responsible for more. All of the killing accrued with in one square mile. Jack is described as carrying a long knife in which he would cut open his victims, and a black Gladstone bag, the contents of which is unknown. ( Sugden, pg.1) Jack the Ripper's identity is unknown which is probably why this case is so famous. It is rumored that Jack the Ripper was a member of the royal family, and that people knew of his identity but wanted to keep it a secret. The London Metropolitan Police system was created in 1829, after the public need for security has been told to the government. The Police Department consisted of 3000 policemen. The Policeman then were poorly paid. A constable's usual pay was 19 shillings, a week. An inspector got around 2 pounds, and some of that money was taken off for the cost of there uniform. There uniform was a blue tail coat with there number and letter of their division on the collar and hat. There only weapon was a short wooden baton. The government had a hard time finding recruits. Most of there men were old soldiers, and many of them were dismissed from the force for drunkenness. Later on the force started to become a real Police force, and the people of London appreciated it. The officers also were given many nicknames such as: Blue devils, peeler, and bobby. In 10 years the London Metropolitan Police Force cut the number of crimes in London by half. The crimes in Victorian England did not go without it's punishments. In early Victorian England Public hanging's were watched by many people, and the stocks were placed in the center of town where people would look at you and even beat you and humiliated you. But in 1838 the ending of all public tortures and executions gave way and became out lawed. These things lead to the building of prisons. In 1730 the prisons were at there worst and were not made for long term offenders. These prisons were so bad because they were privately owned and the owners used the inmates for working purposes. They also shipped these men to other businesses for money paid to the prisons by the companies who needed cheap workers. The prisons lacked sewage and heat which made for horrible working conditions sometimes deadly working conditions. The prisoners life was a horrible one. They worked fourteen hours a day taking only short breaks for lunch and dinner. You only got lunch

Some truths are obvious, and others are difficult to acquire. Some judgments we make are simple; some judgments are complicated. Some arguments, whether made by us or others, may be straightforward and easily understood; other arguments may be complex and consist of a series of smaller arguments, each needing to be critically examined and evaluated. Critical thinking involves knowledge of the science of logic, including the skills of logical analysis, correct reasoning and also an understanding of statistical methods. Critical thinking, however, involves more than just an understanding of logical procedures in our thought processes. A good critical thinker must also understand the source and nature of knowledge and the nature of truth. Perception is, according to dictionary.com, the insight, intuition, or knowledge gained by perceiving. Thus a perceptual block would be a malfunction in an individuals mind, which causes him or her to perceive things the way that the individual has learned it. The perceptual block is caused by the minds tendency to jump to a conclusion too rapidly. Thus, by helping a person to overcome perceptual blocks you are, in a sense, encouraging their ability to change both perspective and perception. It is difficult to change a persons perception of things. Especially if the way they think is due largely on the way the individual was raised. When we look at something, what we see appears to be all there is. However, perception is not limited to the physical act of seeing. It encompasses all the senses that are used to gather facts or observations. This is seen when we are given a new problem to work on, with incomplete facts. We jump to a conclusion on the basis of the facts we have, and then put our minds to work trying to justify that conclusion. Actually, we frequently block ourselves from even solving the problem satisfactorily because the jump to the conclusion that was made carried us to the wrong conclusion. The nature of logic as it relates to critical thinking and my perceptual process have been influenced through sources of enculturation. The nature of logic as understood is when you have a situation, belief, tradition, etc. that is examined and reviewed in great detail to discover the reasoning behind behavior. Critical thinking as I understand it is when you view a situation in multiple ways to get an accurate answer or results. The nature of logic relates to critical thinking by examining the situation and thoughts to get a clearer decision of possible outcomes, or reasoning. For instance, before heading to work you watch the news and their morning traffic update for possible accidents and road closures because you have an hour commute. On this particular morning, you hear the traffic reporter mention that your daily way to work has been closed due to a huge tractor-trailer accident. Logically, and using critical thinking you are able to come up with two alternate routes for getting to work on time. Using further logic and critical thinking you watch the news for further traffic details to make a final decision on one of two alternate choices. You hear that one of your choices is severely backed up, so you decide to go with you other decision to arrive at work punctually and safely. Logic doesn’t just deal with thinking in general. How Fantasy Has Changed Since the 1920s A Century of Fantasy: How the Genre's Changed Since the 1920s The English word, "fantasy," sprang from Old French's  phantasie, or "vision, imagination." But you wouldn't be entirely remiss if you'd thought that it came from  the word, "fantastic." When you consider all the fantastic things in our world and our imaginations, it's no wonder there are so many different subgenres in fantasy - and dedicated readers of each subgenre.In our past piece in this series on writing fantasy, our editors gave tips on writing compelling fantasy fiction. In this post, we conduct a brief examination of the evolution of the genre and its subgenres. Because we've only got so much space, we're going to concentrate on the Anglophone side of things - though fantasy is a worldwide phenomenon that's got roots in Indian myth, dating back to 1500 BC.   And yet, up until the 1940s, "fantasy" wasn't even a universal term for the genre yet! ("Fairy tale" was preferred.)How did we get from there to fantasy's current, steadfast position in mainstream English literat ure?The Two Giants of FantasyEnter two names that you might’ve come across before: C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.The two fathers of fantasy met in 1926 on the campus of Oxford University, where they were both on the faculty together. (Lewis was a part of the Literature faction of the English faculty. Tolkien, unsurprisingly, was more of a Linguistics person.) So it's curious that it seems to actually be young adult and children’s fantasy (something called Harry Potter, in particular) that changed all of that. First,  Harry Potter got everyone reading fantasy. Then the genre really sprang into popular culture when the advent of CGI took fantasy from our books to our silver screens. Suddenly, the worlds that we could only envision in our minds were right in front of our eyes. In 2002, Peter Jackson captured the attention of both readers and non-readers with the Hollywood adaptation of Lord of the Rings. Then  Game of Thrones started showing up on our televisions every week, and that, as they say, is that.Where will fantasy go now?We mentioned it already, but we’ll mention it again. There really is no better time to write fantasy. When you think about it, the biggest pop culture phenomena since the turn of the millennium almost all have ties to fantasy: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Twilight. Even The Hunger Games is a dys topian fantasy, set in an entirely imagined (albeit terrifyingly bleak) world.Looking back now, it’s easy to see the many ways that the genre’s evolved since the days of Tolkien. Consider The Hobbit, which possessed a grand total of zero women. Then take a gander at all the girls who are mainstays in the most popular fantasy books now (Hermione, Katniss, Triss).Admittedly, it’s tough to predict the future, but at the rate that the genre’s progressing, there are two big trends that will carry us through the next couple of years:An ever-diversifying spectrum of characters and worlds as fantasy expands beyond its European and medieval roots. In Tor.com’s past open call for submissions, for instance, they specifically asked for novellas that  were not based on European cultures - seeking, instead, worlds that â€Å"take their influences from Africa, Asia, the indigenous Americas, or any diasporic culture from one of those sources.†Further gen re- and subgenre-blurring. Fantasy already overlaps with romance, mysteries, and thrillers - and we’ll see much more of fantasy’s influences in other genres as the spectrum of writers and readers continues to broaden.Fantasy traditions of other countries will impact the stories of the Anglophone world. Russia, for instance, recently pioneered the increasingly popular "LitRPG" genre, where the stories take place in worlds with video-game mechanics.Ultimately, the future of fantasy rests on the imaginations of all the writers out there. Clark Hull had a similar theory, but instead of purposiveness, he called them drives. Some drives are related to survival (primary) and some are learned (secondary) from reacting to stimulus that helps reduce the primary drive. Sometimes these secondary drives can be considered reinforcements to the primary drive and can become primary drives. Hull came up with the hypothetico-deductive method, which basically meant making hypothesis, testing them, and making deductions about the results. The problem with Hull was that he was criticized for not using large groups when testing his hypotheses, thus making his results questionable. B. F. Skinner, on the other hand, never came up with hypotheses and simp ly looked objectively at responses. He was not concerned with internal processes and his method was only concerned with describing observable responses. Like Hull, Skinner used few subjects in his research and viewed humans as machine-like. Skinner also came up with the idea of operant conditioning where a response is observed even without an observable stimulus. Finally, Skinner also investigated reinforcement schedules to see if responses were affected by delaying reinforcement in a positive or negative manner. Capital punishment is the legally authorized killing of someone as punishment for a crime. Although capital punishment is wrong and is the killing of a human being, capital punishment is legal in thirty-two of the fifty states in the United States, meaning that the other eighteen states outlaw it as a punishment for crime. States that capital punishment is legal in all have different guidelines for what is punishable by death, but mostly murder or other capital offenses are what is punished. Capital punishment is not a better answer than life imprisonment. Capital punishment is wrong because there is a possibility of killing an innocent or mentally ill person, there is no evidence that it is deters crime, the cost is extremely expensive, and there is inconsistency in choosing a punishment for crime. Many people have been sentenced to death for a crime they did not commit. Innocent people are put to death more often than people would assume. The results from â€Å"a recent study by Columbia University Law School found that two thirds of all capital trials contained serious errors† (Arguments), which could eventually lead to a potentially innocent person being put to death if the error of the case was not caught before the time of execution.
